Investigations

The Investigation Division, commanded by Captain EJ. Ochs and Lieutenant Bill Powers is composed of seven detectives, one Digital Forensics Examiner, and the Intelligence Unit.

Detectives are trained in crime scene processing, fingerprinting, electronic surveillance, interviews and interrogations, photography, narcotics identification and testing, search warrants and various other technical skills related to criminal investigations.

The detectives are supervised by Detective Sergeant Robert Ojeda, and are responsible for investigating felony crimes including homicides, kidnapping, robbery, sex offenses, forgery, burglaries, auto thefts, etc. Detectives are further responsible for the investigation of the sale of illegal drugs, and criminal street gangs, as well as intelligence gathering and dissemination. Detectives are assigned to the Garden City/Finney County Drug Task Force, and one detective is assigned to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) position. Detectives perform other collateral duties, such as Task Force Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Garden City / Finney County Gang Intelligence Unit

The Gang Intelligence Unit is comprised of officers from the Garden City Police Department, Finney County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol The Unit has adopted the Team Approach Regarding Gang Enforcement Techniques (TARGET) which is a philosophy used to focus on suppressing gang activity. The Unit further takes a intelligence lead policing philosophy to better combat gang, vice and illegal narcotic activity.
