The Investigation Division, commanded by Captain Michael Utz, is comprised of Detective Sergeant Michael Radke, five detectives, one patrol officer, and two evidence/crime scene technicians.

Currently one patrol officer is assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Drug Task Force.

RECRUITMENT

Two detectives are assigned to the Garden City/Finney County Drug Task Force, a local task force comprised of personnel from the Garden City Police Department and the Finney County Sheriff's Office.

The other four are responsible for investigating felony crimes including homicides, kidnapping, robbery, sex offenses, gang-related crimes, forgery, burglaries, auto thefts, runaways, etc. One of the four detectives acts as a liaison with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to focus on crimes involving armed violent criminals. Those investigations are worked jointly through Project Safe Neighborhoods. Detectives are trained in crime scene processing, fingerprinting, electronic surveillance, interviews and interrogations, photography, narcotics identification and testing, search warrants, and various other technical skills related to criminal investigations.

Evidence Technicians

Evidence/crime scene technicians are responsible for responding to major crime scenes to gather evidence to alleviate detectives and officers from this task so they may focus on the criminal investigation. Evidence technicians are also responsible for the evidence and found property functions.
