The Garden City Police Department established an Honor Guard to pay tribute to officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In January 1996, The Honor Guard became an official part of the Garden City Police Department and almost immediately it was utilized to pay tribute to a member of the department who died of cancer.

Since that time the Honor Guard has been used for several funerals and represents the department at the annual Kansas Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service held at the state capital in Topeka.

The Honor Guard is made up of twelve (12) members. The Honor Guard is commanded by a Lieutenant. Sergeants are responsible for the actual operation of the Honor Guard.

The Honor Guard uniform is the Garden City Police Department uniform with the addition of a white throat scarf, white gloves, and a white braid worn on the left shoulder..

The Honor Guard is utilized for the funerals of Garden City Police Department personnel and their families. Full military honors are rendered to officers killed in the line of duty or honorably discharged veterans of the armed forces. The Honor Guard may also be used for other ceremonial purposes as directed by the Chief of Police or the City Manager.
