Robbery can be a well planned and executed operation, or a crime of
opportunity. Either way, victims can suffer emotionally and sometimes
physically. The crime of robbery is a threat to the safety of the
community, however, there are precautions you can take to prevent or
reduce your chances of victimization from a potential robbery.
Listed below is information to help
alert you to possible signs of danger and to minimize your chances
of becoming a victim.
- Check the
front and rear seats before getting in your car. Keep all doors
locked and windows rolled up far enough that an arm cannot reach
through the opening.
- If you think
you’re being followed, do not head home. Go to a police station,
fire station, or other open business to get help.
- When you
arrive at home be alert and aware of your surroundings. Trust your
instincts.
- Good lighting
around your residence can be an excellent deterrent to criminal
activity.
- If you park in
your garage, close the garage door while you are still in your
locked vehicle and maintain awareness of your surroundings until
your garage door closes. Keep the pass through door from your garage
to your residence locked.
IN THE EVENT OF A ROBBERY
- Comply with
the robber’s requests. Do not risk personal injury.
- Make a mental
note of the robber’s appearance such as height, weight, hair
color/style, and clothing description and call 911 immediately.
- If possible,
take down the vehicle license plate number, a description of the
vehicle, or the direction the robber is fleeing.
Appearing confident and alert, often times causes suspects to avoid
targeting you in particular. Being proactive is always better than
being reactive. Prepare yourself for a crisis by thinking and
planning ahead. This can save you
crucial time and increase your chances for success.
