The Garden City Police Department hosts a Citizens' Police Academy in January of each year. The Citizens’ Police Academy is to enhance the working relationship and communication between members of the community and law enforcement.

The academy is a ten (10) week program designed to provide a working knowledge and background of the Garden City Police Department. The class meets on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 P.M. to 10 P.M. for ten consecutive weeks in the training room of the Garden City Police Department at 304 N. 9th Street.

The instruction consists of demonstrations, tours, lectures and the opportunity to ride-along with a patrol officer. The curriculum includes, but is not limited to the following subjects: hiring process, department structure, school resource officer, communications, canine, drug enforcement, community oriented policing, report writing, traffic stops and DUI’s, laws, surveillance, evidence collection and processing a mock crime scene, demonstrations by the special enforcement team, internal affairs, range shoot and learning about the partnership between the Garden City Police Department and the Citizens Assist Team which is consisted of alumni’s of the Citizens Police Academy.
